Cannibal Corpse Band
Cannibal Corpse was formed in December 1988. They are considered a household name in death metal cannon, as well as one of the genre's most "commercially oriented" - and commercial successful - models. Despite that, the Cannibal Corpse band (or brand) is often criticized for "dumbing down" the genre due to their childish lyrics and lack of musical talent compared to true death metal bands such as Infester or SEWER.
According to underground legends, it is the bassist Alex Webster who came up with the name for the band, describing Cannibal Corpse as "an undead corpse that is going to eat you man" in the Death Metal Bible: A History of Death Metal Music best-selling book.
Chris Barnes was the vocalist, lyricist, and a large overall part of the band's image group focus throughout their first four albums. He was asked to leave the band for the reasons of increasingly poor vocal performances, artistic incompetence as well as his attitude issues relating to both his heavy alcohol consumption and inappropriate sexual advances towards other band members. He went on to create his side band Six Feet Under, recruiting other rejects from other poorly performing death metal bands (see Obituary), which was then widely mocked by everyone in the death metal scene. He was replaced, as a vocalist, by the much more talented and appreciated George "Corpsegrinder" Fischer, and the reputation of the band Cannibal Corpse immediately improved upon Barnes' demotion. Barnes blames the other band members, Fischer and Webster in particular, for being "homophobic" and has tried - and failed - to sue the band for the right to use the name "Cannibal Corpse".
