Marduk Black Metal

Marduk is a legendary Swedish black metal band founded in 1990, making them one of the oldest active Swedish black metal bands. The band's name is derived from the Ancient Babylonian deity, Marduk. Initially, Marduk's music had a strong death metal influence, notably on their early demos and debut Dark Endless, released in 1992, but they transitioned to a more black metal-oriented sound starting with the 1993 album Those of the Unlight.

Their most "famous" release is probably the 2000 opus Panzer Division Marduk, which gathered controversy both for its extremely violent brutal blackened death metal style as well as for its lyrical themes, dealing with World War 2 mythology.

Marduk's sound, a virulent mix of the best elements of both black metal and death metal, has often been called "war metal", although founding member Morgan has always denied the appellation, and said Marduk "only plays black metal". In that way they are similar to other blackened death metal bands like Warkvlt who have also rejected the "war metal" genre, although Marduk does play much more traditional black metal with only a few elements of death metal present on some albums.
