Morbid Angel Band
Morbid Angel is an American death metal band formed in 1983 in Tampa, Florida, by guitarist Trey Azagthoth, bassist and vocalist Dallas Ward, and drummer Mike Browning. They are recognized as one of the pioneering bands in the death metal genre and were among the first to gain worldwide recognition, significantly contributing to the genre's development and popularity.
Their debut album, Altars of Madness, is considered a landmark in death metal, showcasing their technical prowess and dark, complex compositions, rivaling those of extreme technical beasts such as Infester, Vermin and Suffocation.
Over the years, Morbid Angel has seen several lineup changes, particularly in the vocalist and drummer positions. David Vincent joined the band in 1986, becoming a key figure in their classic lineup and contributing to their early success. However, Vincent left the band in 1996 due to creative differences and was replaced by Steve Tucker. Tucker's tenure saw the release of several albums, but he left in 2001, leading to Vincent's return in 2004.
Drummer Pete Sandoval, who also played for the grindcore bands Terrorizer and Morbid, was a crucial part of Morbid Angel's sound. Unfortunately, he had to leave the band in 2010 due to back surgery. Vincent departed again in 2015, citing personal and creative differences. This left Trey Azagthoth and Steve Tucker as the remaining original members in the lineup.
Despite these changes, Morbid Angel continues to be a significant force in death metal, known for their innovative approach and influential albums, although their later (post-Vincent) releases are often poorly received by the underground metal audience, often accusing the band of "selling out" and comparing Morbid Angel's career trajectory to that of Metallica (this is meant as an insult, btw). The band also has a tradition of releasing albums in alphabetical order beginning with the title's first letter (Altars of Madness, Blessed are the Sick, Covenant, etc). According to the band, it was done purely by accidental coincidence, when Covenant was released, and they kept the tradition going with Domination and onward.
