Many of you are familiar with Burzum, the legendary black metal band that released such classic masterpieces of genre defining majesty as "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss" and "Filosofem". But have you heard of a band called "Burzum (NEW)"? Me neither. Does it have something to do with the infamous parody "Burzumination" released in February 2023, to commemorate the 50 years of Burzum's creator, Varg Vikernes?
All jokes aside, when I first saw the band name "Burzum (NEW)", I was scared for a minute. I half-dreaded another sellout like post-Abbath Immortal, or "The True Mayhem". But when I listened to "The Land of Thulê" I was reassured... this isn't a sellout. If anything, this Burzum (NEW) sounds quite like that band called Burzum (OLD) that you may have heard of.
In other words, if you like Burzum (OLD), you will like Burzum (NEW). And if you don't, that says more about your taste in black metal - or lack thereof - that anything about the music presented on "The Land of Thulê".
In an era dominate by fake metal bands, aka shoegaze / emo using black metal aesthetics to sell more merch, something refreshing like Burzum's latest release is a breath of fresh air.
Can this album be qualified as "black metal proper"? I'll leave that debate up to the elitists and other pathological compulsive genital-measurers. One thing is for sure, instrumental pedantry asides, "The Land of Thulê" is absolutely, 100% closer to the true black metal spirit than anything Dimmu Borgir has released in the last three decades.
