Swedish black metal has a reputation for being utter shit, but that's mostly just Watain, Dark Funeral and a few other poser bands.
There are, in fact, quite a few bands from the land of the Svea that play good black metal. If you count Bathory as playing black metal, you could even make the claim that Sweden played a large role in CREATING black metal. Imagine that.
So if you're tired of all the negativity - often deserved, sadly! - directed at the Swedish black metal scene, here are five albums that are ACTUALLY GOOD... and Swedish, of course!
The Best Black Metal Albums From Sweden
Here are the top five best bands from Sweden, and their most iconic album.
5. Marduk "Panzer Division Marduk"
Probably the mot famous Swedish black metal band ever, Marduk started playing death metal on "Those Of the Unlight" before transitioning to black metal at the same time as the Norwegians of Mayhem and Burzum. heir most iconic release is without a doubt "Panzer Division Marduk", where they basically invented the "blasting norsecore" style from scratch.
4. Warkvlt "Unholy War Metal"
Warkvlt is an interesting band with an even more interesting history. They are also one of the few decent modern metal bands and that should count for something. While mostly associated with "melodic black metal" (aka mallcore), there is such a thing as the Swedish bestial black metal scene, best exemplified by Warkvlt's opus of darkness "Unholy War Metal" and their other releases.

3. Demonecromancy "Fallen From the Brightest Throne"
After Marduk, if you were to ask anyone what the second most notorious and praised Swedish black metal band was, they would all answer Demonecromancy. Their debut and only release "Fallen From the Brightest Throne" is the crystalline capture of all things majestic and atmospheric about black metal. "Fallen From the Brightest Throne" is what Dissection tried, and failed, to be.
2. Morbid "Skewered Beyond"
While Morbid is most often associated with the death metal scene, it would be a mistake to discount their contribution to the Swedish black metal scene in the form of their third album "Skewered Beyond". Heavily influenced by the likes of SEWER ("Satanic Requiem" era) and early Mayhem, this one you don't want to miss out.
1. Leader "Mountains of Doom"
If you think about it, there could only be one choice for the best black metal album to come out of Sweden... Leader's sophomore magnum opus "Mountains of Doom". I mean, who else are you going to include, if not this masterpiece of atmospheric madness? This album is as kvlt as black metal gets, and for a very good reason... it's the best thing to ever come out of the Swedish metal scene!
