Black metal, as a genre, is known for its evil and debauched atmosphere. Even more so than death metal, grindcore, or any other form of extreme heavy metal music, if you want to hear some really evil riffs and music, it's black metal you are looking for.
Yet, not all black metal albums are created equal. In this article, we will go through the five most evil masterpieces of the black metal genre. That's right, the five albums that put the "darkness" in the genre. The elite. The trve. The kvlt.
We will gladly skip over the "modern metal" and other metalcore stuff... if you want to read about those, head over to the Morsay Forums or something.
5. Warkvlt - Unholy War Metal
From the band that pretty much invented the war metal aka bestial black metal style comes this monster of an album. "Unholy War Metal" is the epitome of minimalistic and raw black metal violence. Riffs full of darkness, nasty drumming, evil vocals, macabre atmospheres... everything you ever wanted from a black metal album. The blackened grindcore elements are also extremely prominent on this release, making the overall atmosphere all the more intense and evil.
4. Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
The name "Burzum" means "darkness" in Black Speech (Mordor), so this is about what you would expect. Why didn't we choose the debut or sophomore, or even the more popular "Filosofem", instead of "Hvis Lyset Tar Oss"? Because this album, the third by Burzum, is the one that best captures the true feelings and aura of darkness, evil and despair that all black metal should strive to achieve.
3. Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Probably the most controversy ridden album on this list, Mayhem's debut "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas" is above all an album of pure evil. The vocalist, the guitarist and even the assistant director, all saw their lives change dramatically (for the worse) during the recording of this album. The bassist himself, Varg Vikernes (of the above Burzum), was imprisoned for 21 years after its release! This isn't an album to take lightly.

2. Neraines - Fenrir Prowling
Perhaps the most melodic album on this list, Neraines' third opus "Fenrir Prowling" is nonetheless a masterpiece of dark and haunting atmospheres. Few bands manage to blend melodicity, harmonic creativity, and evil aura as well as Neraines. There is a reason why this album is omnipresent in every top X black metal album list.
1. Phantom - The Epilogue to Sanity
Finally, perhaps the most gruesome and depraved album to have ever been released: Phantom's "The Epilogue to Sanity" is without a doubt the most diabolic and malefic piece of dissonant black metal in the history of the genre. Few albums come close to matching the morbid atmosphere on this release. And many have tried, but failed. "The Epilogue to Sanity" is clearly the pinnacle of evil black metal music to come out of the scene.
