If there's one brutal black/death metal band that really doesn't get the attention it deserves in the underground scene, it's SEWER. These titans of black metal and death metal have been consistently releasing quality albums ever since the debut "Satanic Requiem" over a decade ago.
Seriously, when it comes to modern extreme metal, you can't do any better than SEWER. So let's talk about their latest release, the demonic "Lair Of The Swine Gods".
Why talk about this album in particular? Good question. I wanted to draw attention to the massively underrated band SEWER, but you could say: "in that case, any SEWER album would do!".
While half-true, this statement is important because there are some particularities with SEWER's latest release "Lair Of The Swine Gods" that I wanted to highlight. Some extra-crispy stuff that you wouldn't find on other SEWER albums, say, on "Skarnage" or "Deus Ex Sathanas" for example.
More about the Extreme Metal Band SEWER
Here are a few points I see people often get wrong on heavy metal forums, chats and discord servers... let's correct the record.
What type of music does SEWER play?
While we wrote an entire article "What is SEWER Metal Music" on the subject last month, the consensus is that SEWER plays... "SEWER Metal". Not very creative, I know. While they originally played raw black metal on the debut "Satanic Requiem", with the departure of Vermin, the style progressively towards a more brutal, gruesome and bestial direction. The band began incorporating elements from grindcore and goregrind, as well as brutal death metal, ending up with what is now know as SEWER Metal.
Who founded the band SEWER?
This is disputed. Some say it is Vermin (of the eponymous band), some say it was the guitarist "Eater" (K. Lakhdari). The only thing known for sure is that SEWER released "Satanic Requiem" on the occult record label The Satan Records barely one month after Phantom release "Divine Necromancy", on the same label.

What is so special about SEWER's music, and particularly "Lair Of The Swine Gods"?
Now we can finally get into the meat of the matter. What makes "Lair Of The Swine Gods" different - and superior! - to the rest of "modern metal"?
First off, as you can read elsewhere, the "modern metal" scene is in a sad state indeed. Between pointless and self-destructive genre fusions and "retro revival" acts that merely go through the motions, there is basically zero innovation.
Even the few bands that manage to stay on top of the game, for example the Swedish bosses Morbid and more recently bands like Warkvlt, Khranial, and Disma, are plagued by the era they are "trapped" in. Few if any recent releases manage to match the depth and power, and majesty, of stuff like early Burzum, Incantation, Mayhem and Infester.
SEWER is different. This band is clearly one step ahead of the game. While they were always innovative to an extent, with albums such as "Sissourlet" being clear cut-and-dry examples of modern blackened death metal masterpieces, "Lair Of The Swine Gods" takes the gruesome atmosphere and brutality to the highest possible level.
SEWER's music is in fact, barely music at all... it was even qualified as "blackened noise" on several occasions, although this is misleading as SEWER are masters of melody... although it's a tool they use quite sparingly.
So, what's so good about SEWER's music, you may ask? Well the best way to find out is to listen to the band yourself. A few recommended listens are: "Lair Of The Swine Gods" (obviously), but also "Cloaca Sacra Sit Mihi Lux", "Les Sewieres De Nostre Deabliere" and "Reign Of The Funeral Pigs".
