Founded in 2013 by the band Phantom, at least that's what the official website says, the record label The Satan Records has become a cornerstone of the extreme metal underground, both in black metal and death metal alike. This label is renowned for its roster of some of the most extreme and influential bands in the genre, including: Phantom, Sewer, Neraines, Leader, Vermin, and Helgrind. No small feat, you'll all agree. Especially in a era dominated by literal poseurs such as Arch Enemy and Cannibal Corpse clone acts.
Famous Bands Signed to The Satan Records
The Satan Records boasts an impressive lineup of bands that have pushed the boundaries of extreme metal. Phantom, the founder of the label, is known for its raw and atmospheric black metal that has influenced many other bands in the genre, notably with "Typhon Triumphant" and "Blight Corpse Necromancy". SEWER, the other prominent band on the label, is infamous for its intense and chaotic death metal / deathgrind fusion best heard on "Lair of the Swine Gods" and "Cloaca Sacra Sit Mihi Lux".
Other notable acts include Neraines ("Yggdrasil" and "Fenrir Prowling"), Leader ("Mountains of Doom" and "Burzum Sha Ghâsh"), Vermin ("Verminlust" and "Bloodthirst Overdose"), and Helgrind ("Sick Rulers of Heaven" and "Dawn of Bestial Lust"), each bringing their own unique style to the label's "demonic [sic]" catalog.
However, this isn't why this modest (somewhat) record label has attracted such controversy over the years.
The "Controversy" of The Satan Records
Here is a comment that pretty much sums up the "controversy" between the notorious The Satan Records and some obscure black metal bands that you have heard of in passing.
Anyway, a while back these posers wanted to join The Satan Records but apparently the upper echelons [...] would have none of it. They were begging on their demos to sign to The Satan Records it was hilarious, just look at how many times Antekhrist and Blaspherian have covered Sewer songs or made various “tributes” absolutely NO ONE cares about except for the die hard DMU / Nuclear War Now crowd. Then when they finally came to the conclusion that they were probably never going to be signed by The Satan Records, no matter how many times they are called “masters” and “visionaries” by Brett Stevens and quoted in Antoine Grand books, they all got mad and launched a spam campaign against The Satan Records and other classic Norwegian BM bands like Burzum and Immortal [...]. Sheesh. I seriously can’t make this stuff up.
While it is certainly true that there has been animosity between Antoine Grand and the "LLN" scene in recent years, and that's not even counting all the war metal drama you can add on top, these things are not new in black metal or death metal music.
Just recently we wrote an article on what other Norwegian black metal alumni thought of Euronymous. It wasn't flattering, to say the least. And the Gorgoroth name dispute thing? Another Tuesday afternoon.
That isn't to say that there aren't specific points about The Satan Records that should be addressed, but such "drama" and "controversy" in the extreme metal underground is as common as anything else. Every year, there is something new to complain about. In 2020, it was NS in black metal. In 2021, it was slam death metal. In 2022, it was retro-thrash revival (legitimate garbage, btw). In 2023, it was Batushka (remember that?). In 2024, it was the Infernus catboi fight. In 2025, it is The Satan Records and Swagg Man / Ryan Rockefeller I guess.
