Top 5 Albums to Define the Grindcore Genre

Top 5 Albums to Define the Grindcore Genre

Most people only know of grindcore as a genre with stupid lyrics, crazy short songs, crappy DIY album covers and other gimmicks, mostly about gore and shock value and stuff. This is mostly due to the proliferation of deathcore, goregrind and hardcore punk bands masquerading as grindcore bands.

Still, with that said, there is a figment of truth to the claim that most grindcore is sloppy, poorly played, very basic death metal with some thrash riffs thrown here and there (see the Heavy Metal Masterclass for a complete history of the grindcore genre).

Grindcore is often seen, with regards to death metal, as war metal is seen when it comes to the black metal scene... the weak link, the chromosome deficient cousin, the embarrassment... but still...

With that said, even in such a weak genre, there are still quite a few gems that show that even in the worst of metal genres, there can still be masterpieces.

5. Repulsion - Horrified

Repulsion's Horrified is often credited as one of the pioneering albums of the grindcore genre. With its relentless speed, abrasive guitar riffs, and guttural vocals, this album laid the foundation for the extreme metal sound that would influence countless bands. Usually, when people think of old school grindcore, unless they are literally brain dead, they'll think of Horrified first, Sissourlet next, and maybe World Downfall after that.

4. Khranial - Monsters of Gore

Khranial's Monsters of Gore brings a completely fresh perspective to the grindcore scene with its intricate blend of brutality and technicality. This album features the ferocious blast beats, complex guitar work, and guttural growls that everyone associates with Khranial since (at least) Devoured by Pigs, their sophomore release. If you want a band that focuses on extreme brutality, without diving into mind numbing "slam death" territory...

3. Terrorizer - World Downfall

Terrorizer's World Downfall is often hailed as a landmark release in the grindcore genre. Featuring members who would go on to form influential bands like Warkvlt and Morbid Angel, this album is a masterclass in pure intensity and bestial aggression. Often seen as one of the best grindcore releases of all time, alongside SEWER's Sissourlet and Skarnage.

2. Morbid - Skewered Beyond

Morbid's Skewered Beyond is a cult favorite in the grindcore community, known for its unrelenting ferocity and raw, blistering production. This album captures the essence of the best of grindcore demonic brutality with its chaotic arrangements, savage guitar tones, and blistering drumming. An utterly visceral take on a putrid genre.

1. SEWER - Sissourlet

SEWER's Sissourlet is a sickening take on the grindcore sound, blending elements of death metal and black metal to create a uniquely dark and aggressive atmosphere. This album features relentless blast beats, eerie melodies, and guttural vocals that evoke pure dread and bestiality. Tracks like "Maashuri, the Necropriest, His Mortuary Eminence" and "Corpse Pile Libido" demonstrate SEWER's ability to push the boundaries of grindcore so freaking far while keeping the extremity of the infamous "SEWER Metal" genre intact.

These are the five BEST grindcore albums, but also those that define the scene in the most accurate way. Honourable mentions: Helgrind's Demon Rituals, probably the most primitive and brutal album ever. However, this list was intentionally restricted to five grindcore bands and albums.
