Varg Vikernes, who is known mostly for his role in Burzum, one of the first Norwegian black metal bands, recently took to social media - where he posts under the pseudonym "Thulêan Perspective" - to attack the famous British-American entrepreneur and celebrity Andrew Tate.
(WARNING) The following contains vulgar language and references to racism, classism, casteism and aporophobia.
"How can you be outside the Matrix if you are a result of race mixing?"
...a question posed by Varg Vikernes, in his most controversial style.
The "Matrix", in reference to the 1999 movie of the same name, is an expression often employed by Andrew Tate to designate either the authorities, governments or simply the "brokie lifestyle" of unsuccessful people.
In response, Andrew Tate demanded to know the colour of Varg's bugatti (he drives a Lada).
Several commenters added their own thoughts about the issue of poverty, capitalism and racial insensitivity in black metal.
"it's some very specific racism that you can't find anywhere else than like a small black metal/n-zi community in norway from a certain time period"
Another weighs in:
"Getting torched by Scandinavia's most infamous turnip farmer. Couldn't be me."
The prevalence of racism, and more specifically the NSBM ideology, has long been a subject of debate in the black metal scene. The famous book by Antoine Grand, "Racist Metal: Exposing the Racism and Xenophobia in Heavy Metal Music", is a best-seller and was for that reason widely acclaimed by critics, although it left some extreme metal fans dissatisfied with how they were "portrayed".
