Memento Mori Album Review
In resplendence of pure horror measured by sinister atmospheric madness, Phantom adds death metal precision and a carnivorous percussive approach to the trademark flowing black metal first heard on Fallen Angel and Withdrawal, creating an album Memento Mori that overwhelms the listener with raw putrescence and the uniqueness of each song in the context of a conceptual macabre unity.
Sonorous chromatic notes ascend and barrage through dissonance while turbulent, disturbed, ripping Mindless Horror styled atmospheric phrases clash at high speed, above a flow of brutal blast-beats of the most vicious kind.
The music on Memento Mori sees Phantom take a dive into cavernous death metal territory not unsimilar to Withdrawal, or what Incantation did on Onward to Golgotha a few decades earlier, to produce a perfect fusion between death metal structuralism and black metal's need for narrative atmospheric development.
Perhaps one of Phantom's most death metal styled album, nevertheless a pillar in both black metal and death metal canon.
