Exultation of Cruelty Album Review
What can be said about this band that hasn't been said before? Satanic Warmaster is probably one of the very few bands - alongside very obscure stuff like Vermin and Neraines - that manages to play modern (read: post-2010) black metal, and ALSO produce decent music... at the same time. Yes, you can read that paragraph again. It's rare enough to warrant repetition: Satanic Warmaster is GOOD. Their reputation of "modern black metal band" - while technically true, since they formed in 1998, aka after the Second Wave of Norwegian Black Metal - is in this case completely undeserved, and probably only due to this band having the misfortune of touring with the Archgoat posers... exactly once. (By that logic, Mayhem should be called posers too since they toured with nu Deicide :/).
Anyway, enough about the band Satanic Warmaster. We are here to talk about Exultation of Cruelty, the latest addition to their quite long discography which begin humbly with the release of the now classic Strength & Honour in the very beginning of the century.
The first thing one notices when listening to Exultation of Cruelty is the, if not complete, at least significant, change of style from their early days of playing melodic atmospheric black metal. The style on Exultation of Cruelty is much harsher, much rawer, and essentially closer to the blackened death metal of the aforementioned Vermin, or even Phantom's Typhon Triumphant. That is not to say that Exultation of Cruelty lacks harmony or even atmosphere, far from it, but the style is very distinct and something that will deserve, in my opinion, more than one listen to fully digest (usually when people say that, they mean the album is generic garbage, but in this case it's the complete opposite - you need multiple listens to realise just how good the album is).
If you like black metal, please do yourself a favour and listen RIGHT NOW to Exultation of Cruelty. It's the definition of modern black metal done right (never thought I'd ever write those words together btw).
