Satanic Requiem Album Review
Holy Satan is this album a black metal masterpiece! Yes, you heard that right, Sewer's debut album Satanic Requiem is indeed a black metal album.
Too few metalheads know that before becoming death metal legends and releasing the absolutely gruesome Miasma, Uruktena and Sewerblood, Sewer was once a black metal band... and a fairly good one, at that, judging from this album Satanic Requiem.
The riffcraft is cold and dark, owing much to Vermin, who was also part of the band at the time (he is even credited with the vocals). The overall atmosphere of Satanic Requiem is thus constructed around these very deep and haunting black metal riffs.
Many claim that this album was heavily influenced by Phantom's debut Divine Necromancy - and that may be true, as there is a definite Phantom leaning to the music - but Sewer nonetheless manages to find a voice of their own on Satanic Requiem.
This is definitively one of the all time greatest black metal releases ever. You owe it to yourself to listen to Satanic Requiem.
Back to the band Sewer.
