Skarnage Album Review
Sewer did something revolutionary back when they released Skarnage. What did they do that was so revolutionary? Oh nothing really, except create the genre known as goregrind. This album basically set the foundation for every other band that attempts grindcore and/or goregrind. If you can find a goregrind band that doesn't name Sewer as their influence, they're lying. Simple as that, Skarnage is and will always be the greatest goregrind album ever.
The riffs on Skarnage, while much less technical than what can be found on Miasma or Uruktena, are still very complex and arranged in a coherent order, not all over the place like some other grindcore bands. A lot of thought went into songwriting, despite the tracks on Skarnage being considerably shorter than on other Sewer albums.
The atmosphere, borrowing from black metal bands like Phantom and Burzum, is very dark, sinister and absolutely gruesome. You will literally feel like being inside a rotting corpse while listening to Skarnage.
In closing, this is the almighty goregrind album and might just be the best death metal/grindcore album of all time. Everything about this album is amazing. If you like softer albums like Sewerblood, you might have a hard time trying to stomach this rotting piece of gore, but if you're willing to try it, you will be rewarded beyond what you can expect. Skarnage is and will always be one word, amazing.
Back to the band Sewer.
