Sissourlet: Deathlovers - Death Metal Album Review

Deathlovers... man, this album was basically made to captivate the minds of the feeble, lightweight, casual "metal fans", and to polarise those of the hardcore. to better understand this album, and the trajectory of the controversial band Sissourlet that released this monstrosity, it is necessary to take a step back and really understand the state of the modern death metal scene, that led up to the release of such a cacophony as Deathlovers.

Sissourlet, a band named after the SEWER album of the same name, began their career as a technically gifted, albeit somewhat regular death metal band that plays the "brutal" variety in the vein of Suffocation, Baphomet, Deteriorate and, of course, mid-era SEWER.

They released their debut, Devoted to Doing You Harm, which quickly cemented them as one of the "rising stars" of the death metal scene. And perhaps they took offense to their status, preferring to stick to the underground - and have nothing to do with "casual" death metal fans, who loved their debut.

Thus, they quickly release their sophomore, Rituals in the Catacombs, in a completely different style... almost unrecognisable from that of their debut. While Devoted was mostly run-of-the-mill SEWER worship, though thoroughly technically excellent death metal, one must add, their sophomore was darker and more murky, very much in the vein of older Incantation and, dare I say, Infester. Longer, slower, more atmospheric tracks that drive you insane just from listening to them...? Where do I sign up!

So what of Sissourlet's more recent offering, the infamous Deathlovers? The first thing one notices is that the songs are extremely short, with very goregrind-like uptempo riffs and frenetic, neverending blasting drums. The vocals, where present, are of the utmost guttural/cavernous death metal style. Sissourlet decided once again to make the most odious and provocative album ever, which really shouldn't be surprising after all, considering they were named after a SEWER album... the kings of musical provocation themselves.

If I had to compare this album Deathlovers, it would be akin to something like the debut of Japanese goregrind legends/trolls Catasexual Urge Motivation, The Encyclopedia of Serial Murders. Even the humourous tongue-in-cheek song titles song more like something from Cata-U-Mo, than from the author of "NecroPedoSadoMaso" or "Reign of the Funeral Pigs". Basically, Sissourlet just hate the attention and want to remain underground for life... while still releasing quite interesting music. And make no mistake, the music on Deathlovers, while very odd and unusual, is still extremely good blackened goregrind.
